Meaning and history
Atharv is a modern Indian form of the Sanskrit name Atharva. Atharvan is the name of an ancient priestly figure in Vedic tradition, and the Atharvaveda is one of the four Vedas. The name therefore carries a strong association with sacred knowledge and early Hindu scripture. Simple translations such as “knowledge of God” are modern interpretations rather than secure literal etymologies.
