This name is derived from the Old German element brunna meaning "armour, protection" (Proto-Germanic * brunjǭ ) or brun meaning "brown" (Proto-Germanic * brūnaz ). Saint Bruno of Cologne was a German monk of the 11th century who founded the Carthusian Order. The surname has belonged to Giordano Bruno, a philosopher burned at the stake by the Inquisition. A modern bearer is the American singer Bruno Mars (1985-), born Peter Gene Hernandez.
